The member-led board of the Maine People’s Alliance (of which Beacon is a project) has endorsed Democratic U.S.
Senate nominee Troy Jackson in his race against Sen.
Susan Collins, along with Democratic gubernatorial nominee Hannah Pingree, U.S.
Rep.
Chellie Pingree in the 1st Congressional District, and Matt Dunlap in the 2nd Congressional District.
“Troy has demonstrated that he has a solid activist base of support behind him,” said MPA Board Secretary Shaun Donnelly.
“The organizing power of his team and his base are exactly what we need to defeat Susan Collins and overcome the large amounts of money that Republicans will be throwing against us to win.”
Donnelly said the board endorsed Hannah Pingree because of her commitment to advancing progressive priorities, particularly on housing, health care, childcare and tribal sovereignty.
Endorsed legislative candidates spotlight housing, immigration protections and fair taxes
MPA also announced endorsements for 52 Democratic candidates running for the Maine Legislature, saying the slate reflects its priorities on affordable housing, health care, tax fairness, workers’ rights and protecting vulnerable communities.
MPA members said many of its endorsed legislative candidates have established records or are campaigning on issues central to the organization’s agenda, including expanding affordable housing, resisting federal immigration enforcement, and asking the wealthiest Mainers to pay more in taxes.
Among them is Rep.
Ambureen Rana of Bangor, who helped pass Maine’s new millionaire tax and has championed legislation limiting cooperation between state officials and federal immigration officers.
As a member of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee, Rana also helped secure funding for affordable rental housing while advocating for Mainers facing eviction, discrimination and barriers to health care.
Rep.
Cheryl Golek of Harpswell, who is seeking another term, has also been a leading supporter of the millionaire tax and has pushed legislation to strengthen protections for residents of manufactured home communities, including weatherization funding and limits on unreasonable lot rent increases .
Matthew Townsend, a first-time candidate for an open House seat representing Fairfield and Benton, is campaigning on making Maine’s tax system fairer while addressing rising housing costs, property taxes and PFAS contamination.
The organization’s endorsed Senate candidates also include Lewiston Democrat Shanna Cox, who has focused her campaign on expanding affordable childcare, child tax credits and health care access, arguing those programs help families and small businesses succeed.
