US: First of kind 100 MW sodium cooled small modular reactor deployment gets a boost 48%

US advanced nuclear reactor developer ARC Clean Technology has signed an agreement with Battelle Energy Alliance to support the first deployment of its ARC-100 small modular reactor at Idaho National Laboratory. 
The project is expected to cover the full reactor lifecycle, from detailed engineering and site preparation to commissioning, operation, and possible decommissioning or mission conversion. 
The partners will use laboratory facilities and expertise to reduce technical risk before construction, licensing, and commercial-scale deployment activities begin. 
Building on earlier reactor work 
The new arrangement expands a relationship formed through the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Concepts 2020 program. 
Under that effort, laboratory teams supported fuel design, probabilistic risk assessment, and regulatory engagement with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. 
“This partnership with Idaho National Laboratory marks a pivotal step in ARC’s mission to bring safe, reliable, advanced nuclear energy to the world,” said Irfan Ali, President & Chief Strategy Officer at ARC Clean Technology Inc. 
“INL’s capabilities in reactor design, materials science, and regulatory engagement are unmatched, and we look forward to working alongside their expert teams to demonstrate the promise of our technology,” he continued. 
Under the framework, individual project task statements will set the technical scope, funding, deliverables, and schedule for specific activities. 
Each task will require Department of Energy approval before work begins. 
Testing, materials, and site development 
Laboratory support will span engineering reviews, advanced manufacturing, materials assessment, high-performance computing, reactor modeling, irradiation testing, safety analysis, commissioning, operations, and site development. 
“INL specializes in advanced reactor technologies, and we look forward to supporting ARC as they work toward the first deployment of the ARC100,” said Jess Gehin, INL Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear Science & Technology. 
“Our teams will contribute our expertise in design review, materials evaluation, and safety analysis to help guide the project forward,” he added. 
The laboratory’s nuclear infrastructure includes the Advanced Test Reactor, the Transient Reactor Test Facility, and the Materials and Fuels Complex. 
These facilities can support fuel qualification, materials testing, transient behavior studies, and other technical work needed before a first-of-a-kind reactor can enter service. 
Targeting firm power for rising demand 
The ARC-100 is designed to provide flexible, dispatchable power from a compact footprint. 
Its developers see potential applications in areas where round-the-clock electricity is critical, including data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure, which are placing growing demands on the US power system. 
A successful first deployment could also strengthen the country’s advanced nuclear export position. 
Demonstrating the reactor at a national laboratory would provide technical and operational evidence for future projects abroad, while offering allies another option for reliable low-carbon power. 
The partnership therefore carries both domestic and strategic importance. 
It could help prove a new reactor design, support growing electricity demand, and reinforce US influence in a global nuclear market increasingly shaped by state-backed competitors.
