California has sent firefighters to battle fast-moving wildfires that broke out near Spokane, Wash., on Saturday and have destroyed about 600 structures and forced thousands of people to evacuate.
The multiagency California Team 7, comprising local, state and federal responders, announced it was reassigned from the Fox Fire in Oregon to the Spokane Complex wildfires and assumed command around 9 a.m.
Sunday.
Three major blazes broke out near the Spokane area Saturday — the Old Trails, Fairview and Autumn Lane fires — jumping a river before moving toward dense residential areas.
They are around 3,500 acres, 700 acres and 3,300 acres, respectively, Team 7 lead public information officer Tom Stokesberry said in an update Sunday.
The most active is the Autumn Lane.
“Our fire as of this morning is the number one priority in the nation so we have a lot of resources on order and they’ll be coming in today, tomorrow and the next day,” he said.
“The weather is still going to be a little challenging today and over the next couple days.
We have a lot of firefighters on the ground, we’re working really hard to keep these fires in their current footprint.
The fire began amid extreme weather conditions, with gusts up to 45 mph across a drought-plagued region.
Before the winds, the National Weather Service issued a “particularly dangerous situation” red flag warning, a level of caution the agency reserves for the most dangerous fire weather conditions.
It was the first time the weather service had used that level of language in Washington state.
A particularly dangerous situation was warned before the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires.
Team 7 is the second Cal Fire crew deployed to help fight fires in Washington state.
Last week, Incident Management Team 4 arrived in rural Okanogan County to assist with the Sinlahekin Fire.
Winds were expected to shift this week and blow smoke from fires in eastern Washington and Oregon toward more populated areas along the Interstate 5 corridor, including Seattle and Portland, Ore.
High-level smoke was also possible across Northern California as early as Tuesday.
A heat wave hitting the Southwest is rapidly drying vegetation across California and raising fire danger to the highest level so far this year.
