After conquering ratings, ranking as No. 1 on Prime Video since its July 15 release, and winning over critics with 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, Prime Video’s ‘Ride Or Die’ is setting sights on awards, starting with the upcoming guild races, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
The hourlong action series starring Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer will be submitted in the comedy series categories, which has become the preferred route for genre-blending shows, including ‘Widow’s Bay, The Lowdown, Young Sherlock, Ponies, Spider-Noir, Elsbeth, ’ and The Bear’ this Emmy cycle.
Created by Tessa Coates, ‘Ride Or Die’ centers on an assassin, Judith (Waddingham), whose best friend of more than 20 years, MP’s wife Debbie (Spencer), is pulled into her latest case.
The show being a true two-hander, both Waddingham and Spencer will be submitted in the Lead Actress In a Comedy category.
That would keep Waddingham’s two shows on different tracks — she also is back as Rebecca in Season 4 of Apple TV’s ‘Ted Lasso,’ for which she competes in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.
Waddingham won an Emmy for Season 1 and also was nominated for Seasons 2 and 3.
Two of Waddingham and Spencer’s standout co-stars, Ed Skrein, who plays Judith’s mark-turned-partner and love interest Billy, and Bill Nighy, who plays Judith’s boss and father figure The Director, will be submitted as Supporting Actors In a Comedy Series.
Since its debut, ‘Ride or Die’ has delivered strong viewership largely via word of mouth as the series did not have the same wide marketing campaign as Prime Video’s summer YA slate.
It has now eclipsed some of those young-skewing titles in ratings, a notable feat for a series with two 50-something women as the leads.
