A new mural honoring late WSB-TV anchor and beloved public figure Jovita Moore has been repainted on the side of Bellwood Coffee in Grant Park.
Atlanta artist Tommy Bronx, who painted the first mural in 2021 shortly after Moore’s death from cancer, returned to create a new version.
Prior to its April 25 opening, the owners of Bellwood Coffee painted over the original mural memorializing Moore, after newly installed windows “significantly” cut into the painting.
The decision to paint over Moore’s mural led to online backlash, with the coffee shop’s owners publicly apologizing and vowing to recommission it.

Why the mural matters
The original mural had been part of Atlanta United’s “Spirit of 17” series, which spotlighted local trailblazers.
It also served as an informal gathering spot for people who wanted to remember Moore, a longtime TV anchor known for her advocacy of local nonprofits and mentorship of young journalists.
After it was painted over, local residents, journalists, and civic leaders pushed back, arguing that Moore’s mural had become part of the neighborhood’s identity.
Bellwood Coffee acknowledged its mistake in painting over the mural, working with Moore’s children, Shelby and Josh Griffith, and Bronx on the new design.
“This mural is about far more than paint on a wall,” Shelby Griffith said in a press release.
“It represents Atlanta’s collective memory, our appreciation for my mom, Jovita Moore’s remarkable life, and our belief that the people who shape our communities should never be forgotten.”
Bronx said the backlash over the original mural’s removal caught him off guard, in a good way.
“Seeing how deeply this mural resonated reminded all of us that public art belongs to the community,” he said in a statement.
“It is an honor to once again celebrate Jovita’s life and create something that reflects the love Atlanta continues to have for her.”

Moore, who joined WSB-TV Channel 2 in 1998, and won her first of eight Emmys in 2001, died from brain cancer in 2021.
Her death prompted an outpouring from viewers who saw her as more than a familiar face on the evening news.
“Jovita loved Atlanta, and Atlanta loved her back,” WSB-TV President and General Manager Marian Pittman told Rough Draft in May.
“Whether she and her kids were volunteering with one of her many nonprofits, like Meals on Wheels Atlanta and Our House, or she was hosting any number of events in our community, her passion for the community was clear.”
Owned by brothers Joel and Charles Norman and Tommy Keough, Bellwood Coffee first launched as a coffee cart in 2018.
The first permanent location of Bellwood Coffee opened a year later in Atlanta’s Riverside neighborhood.
Bellwood Coffee now includes locations in Decatur, East Atlanta Village, Midtown, Underwood Hills, and Grant Park.
To honor Moore’s legacy, the Grant Park coffee shop features a strawberry vanilla matcha drink call the JoMo.
Chosen by her family, Bellwood will donated $2 from every JoMo sold to the National Brain Tumor Society through the end of August.
