The open-ear design is the first thing to understand here. 
AirPods 4 don't seal your ear canal the way AirPods Pro do, so they naturally let in more outside sound. 
Apple's H2 chip helps offset that with active noise cancellation, and it does a genuinely good job for an open design, even if it can't match the stronger isolation of sealed earbuds like the AirPods Pro 2. 
The chip also powers features such as Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, which automatically adjust what you hear based on your surroundings. 
Sound quality is another strong point, with punchy bass and clear highs that make these buds enjoyable across a wide range of music, though there's no way to adjust the EQ. 
Also on the potential downside is its battery life, which is less than impressive at about four hours with active noise cancellation turned on, according to this PCMag review . 
For someone who wants ANC but dislikes the sealed feeling of in-ear buds, this refurbished deal is a real value. 
The price undercuts every other version of this product by a wide margin, and the core listening experience, from spatial audio to IP54 water resistance, carries over intact. 
But if all-day battery life or a locked-in fit is a priority, an open design with a four-hour ANC runtime may not be the right fit, no matter how good the price gets.
