A suspect in a Newport shooting that injured two people was arrested in Virginia Wednesday morning, July 29, according to the Newport police.
The 19-year-old was arrested by members of the U.S.
Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force at about 8:30 a.m. at a residence in Newport New, Virginia, the Newport police said.
He was arrested on a warrant from the Newport police for felony assault with a firearm and discharging afirearm in a compact area.
The arrest is related to a shooting on the night of July 19 in the area of Truman Road and Rosedale Avenue, according to the police.
Responding to a report of shots fired around 9:55 p.m., officers found two victims with gunshot wounds to their lower extremities.
The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Investigating the incident, detectives learned there were two victims.
Learning that he might have fled to Virginia, detectives contacted the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force for help.
The task force was able to link him to the residence in Virginia.
The police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
