SAN DIEGO – The Houston Astros recalled outfielder Jake Meyers from Triple-A Sugar Land ahead of their series opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday at Petco Park.
Meyers takes the roster spot opened by the Astros <a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/zach-dezenzo-optioned-minors-22377618.php" data-link="native" rel="noopener" target="_blank" class="">optioning Zach Dezenzo</a> to Triple-A after Wednesday’s series finale against the Blue Jays.
<a href="https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/daulton-varsho-astros-22372596.php" data-link="native" rel="noopener" target="_blank" class="">Daulton Varsho</a>, acquired by the Astros at the trade deadline, is “still our center fielder,” manager Joe Espada said Friday afternoon.
Meyers, the Astros’ opening day center fielder, provided backup at that position and a right-handed bat in the outfield against left-handed pitching.
With the Astros facing Padres left-hander Robbie Ray on Friday, their lineup had Meyers in center field and Varsho in left.
Espada said that was “just for today” given that Varsho has more experience in left field than Meyers, who has played 21 1/3 innings in left field in the majors and none since 2024.
Meyers, the Astros’ opening day center fielder, batted .206 with a 63 OPS-plus in 52 games prior to being optioned to Triple-A in early July.
In his 20 games at Triple-A, Meyers had a .243/.325/.351 slash line with four extra-base hits.
He was 11-for-29 over his last seven games with Sugar Land.
“His swing looks a lot better, he’s made some adjustments,” Espada said.
“Trying to get some production against lefty pitching.
Jake has a track record of doing that, so get him up here and see if he can help us.”
Along with Varsho, corner outfielders Taylor Trammell and LaMonte Wade Jr. both hit left-handed.
Right fielder Cam Smith is the only right-handed hitting outfield regular, which could open the opportunity for Meyers to get at-bats against left-handed pitching.
