Audrey Jane (Brucher) Jurek, 89, passed away June 24, 2026, in Maurice, LA.
Born Oct. 12, 1936, in Aurora, IL, Audrey was the youngest of five children and the only daughter of Bernard and Anna (Novack) Brucher.
She contracted polio in 1949, which left her without the use of her right arm, but this never stopped Audrey from being a force of nature.
A proud Naperville native, Audrey was a graduate of Naperville High School, class of 1955, and on July 27, 1957, she married John Jurek at Ss.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
They welcomed son Dan in 1960 and daughter Amy in 1962.
An active member of the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club, and later the Naperville Woman’s Club, Audrey was passionate about supporting Naperville and its citizens.
Audrey was also an excellent typist, clocking 75 words per minute with just one hand, and had a lengthy career doing administrative work at SASED, Amoco Research Center and the Law Offices of Edward P.
Graham.
In 1967, Audrey was instrumental in the development and implementation of The Helping Hand Program, a program that allowed Naperville homeowners to register private residences as safe places for children who were lost, hurt or in danger.
Homeowners displayed a red and white sign in the front window that featured the outline of Audrey’s hand.
Those signs were a core memory for multiple generations of kids growing up in Naperville.
Audrey and John had a zest for life.
Audrey was known for hosting fantastic parties, and she and John enjoyed many travel adventures together, including multiple cruises and trips to Europe.
They retired to Rio Verde, AZ, in 2004, where Audrey was able to hone her skills in card games such as “Spite and Malice” and “Hand and Foot.”
In 2019 she moved to Lafayette, LA, to be closer to her great-grandchildren.
Audrey is survived by her children Dan (Jane) Jurek and Amy (Dave) Byers; grandchildren Katie (Jon) Storms, Rebecca (Chris) LaFleur, Daniel (Kari) Jurek, Susanna (Andrew) Juneau and Elizabeth Jurek; great-grandchildren Silas, Patrick, Audrey, Sterling and Amelia; and brother Mel (Elaine) Brucher.
She was preceded in death by her husband John and her brothers Ray, Bud and Bernie.
A funeral mass and inurnment will be August 14th, 11am at Ss.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Naperville.
Visitation August 13th, 4-6pm at Beidelman-Kunsch at 516 S.
Washington St, Naperville.
