GROSSE ILE TOWNSHIP  A Brownstown Township resident died in a boating accident near Celeron Island in Grosse Ile Township early Sunday morning, police said.
At about 2:52 a.m., the U.S.
Coast Guard received a distress call over Marine Radio Channel 16 reporting a boating accident.
The Coast Guard notified the Grosse Ile Township Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and TowBoatUS of Gibraltar, and emergency crews responded to the scene.
Responders found a 37-foot Rinker boat that had run aground on the Habitat Shoals, southeast of Celeron Island.
The boat was about 80% out of the water when first responders arrived.
Investigators determined two people were aboard the boat.
The boat’s owner, a Rockwood resident, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A second occupant, a Brownstown Township resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the boat is based at Humbug Marina in Gibraltar and left the marina at about 2:30 a.m.
The victim’s body was taken to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
Police said investigators have not determined who was operating the boat at the time of the crash and are also working to determine whether alcohol or any other factors contributed to the accident.
