LANSING — Polls closed across most of Michigan at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, but it’s too soon to say who won or lost primaries in any of the state’s 13 congressional districts. 
Closely watched races include the 7th District, where Democrats Bridget Brink, William Lawrence and Matt Maasdam are competing in a three-way primary, and the 13th District, where incumbent Democrat US Rep. 
Shri Thanedar is facing a significant primary challenge. 
More than 1.3 million absentee ballots had already been submitted by 6 p.m., according to the Michigan Secretary of State’s office, a 16% increase from the August primary four years ago. 
“We expect that number to increase,” Secretary of State spokesperson Angela Benander told reporters earlier Tuesday, adding that the state is already “at about 20% turnout statewide for our active registered voters.” 
Because absentee ballots take longer to count than in-person votes, full results may not be available immediately for some of the state’s most important congressional races.

Here’s what we know so far: 
A spirited 7th District primary in mid-Michigan 
Lawrence, a progressive Democrat, has emerged as a potential upset candidate in the 7th Congressional District, which includes all of Clinton, Shiawassee, Ingham and Livingston counties, as well as portions of Eaton, Genesee and Oakland counties.

Maasdam, a former Navy SEAL, and Brink, a former US Ambassador to Ukraine, have battled for support among more traditional and establishment Democrats, potentially splitting that vote. 
Late results expected in MI-13 
Progressives are also hoping for a win in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, where state Rep. 
Donavan McKinney is attempting to oust Thanedar, an incumbent Democrat. 
The district is entirely inside Wayne County and, given its political makeup, will likely remain in Democratic hands, meaning the primary is more important than the general election. 
However, Detroit is often slow to report results, meaning it may take a while to decide this race. 
Thanedar is a wealthy businessman who first won election to the US House in 2023. 
That win marked the first time since 1995 that Detroit did not have a Black representative in Congress.
