Genesee County reports 366 cyclosporiasis cases as Michigan outbreak surpasses 9,000 34%

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan has now reported 9,253 cases of cyclosporiasis statewide, including 366 cases in Genesee County, according to the latest update from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The July 27, 2026, update marks an increase of more than 1,000 cases since Friday.
MDHHS said approximately 475 of those cases were not previously reported because of delayed laboratory reporting and do not reflect a sudden increase in illnesses.
The agency also reported that 160 people with cyclosporiasis have been hospitalized.
The intestinal illness is caused by the Cyclospora parasite and is typically spread through food or water contaminated with the parasite.

Food and Drug Administration and public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to iceberg lettuce across nine states.
Federal officials are focusing on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms as a possible source.
The outbreak was initially linked to lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in five states.
Taylor Farms has recalled 25 shredded lettuce and salad mix products sold under eight different brand codes.
The products are used by a number of U.S. food chains and suppliers.
The FDA said a laboratory test incorrectly identified a positive result for Cyclospora in a sample of Taylor Farms lettuce.
The agency initially posted the finding before later determining it was a false positive.
Despite the erroneous test result, FDA officials said traceback investigations and outbreak data continue to point to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms locations in central Mexico.
“FDA’s traceback investigation and the outbreak data continue to converge on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms’ locations in central Mexico,” said FDA's acting food chief, Donald Prater in an earlier brief.
MDHHS recommends several safety measures when preparing lettuce and leafy greens, including buying whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-washed, bagged lettuce or pre-mixed salad kits.
Before preparation, residents should remove and discard the outer two to three layers of leaves and thoroughly wash the remaining inner leaves under clean running water.
MDHHS also recommends cooking leafy greens when possible, noting that heating food to 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius) or higher kills Cyclospora .
