FLINT, Mich. — Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson's campaign for Michigan governor came to an end Tuesday after voters selected Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson as the Democratic nominee in the state's primary election.
Benson will advance to the Nov. 3 general election, where she is expected to face Republican U.S.
Rep.
John James, who won the Republican primary to replace term-limited Gov.
Gretchen Whitmer.
Swanson, a longtime Genesee County resident and sheriff since 2020, entered the race in February 2025 after building a statewide profile through his public safety initiatives and community policing efforts.
His campaign emphasized reducing violent crime, improving education and expanding economic opportunities across Michigan.
Unofficial statewide election results showed Benson receiving about 83% of the Democratic vote, while Swanson earned roughly 17%.
In Genesee County, Benson gained 32,595 votes at 52.79% while Swanson garnered 29,060 votes, which was 47.06%.
