LITTLE VILLAGE — Little Village neighbors are searching for answers after a beloved community activist and mother of four was killed in a hit-and-run last week.
Neighbors packed the 2500 block of South Hamlin Avenue in an outpouring of support Sunday afternoon — just days after Belesda Toledo, 47, was killed in a hit-and-run on the same street — to celebrate her life and raise money for her family.
Around 11:40 a.m.
Wednesday, Toledo was hit by a white truck while she was crossing the intersection of South Hamlin Avenue and West 25th Street, police said.
The truck fled the scene, and Toledo was later pronounced dead at Mt.
Sinai Hospital.
Police said an investigation was ongoing.
Both the Cook County Crime Stoppers and the Chinese Crisis Responder are offering rewards for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible — set at $1,000 and $5,000, respectively.
A representative for the Cook County Crime Stoppers told Block Club that there are “good leads” in the investigation.
“We’re here to raise awareness,” said Raul Montes, a local organizer.
“We want to hold [the perpetrator] responsible for her death.
… She was just on her way back from the grocery store.
She got struck right there.”
Toledo was a mother of four and a community pillar who volunteered with several local non-profits, her brother Martin Toledo told Block Club.
“She did a lot of volunteering, nonprofit work, and she was a good person throughout the neighborhood,” Martin Toledo said.
“She was very helpful to me.
… It’s a big loss for my family.”

She served as a member of the Little Village Community Council and assisted with outreach efforts during Operation Midway Blitz, Little Village Community Council President Baltazar Enriquez said.
“She would volunteer for us, she would come wrap gifts, come help us fold clothes and also help give out the diapers,” he said.
“Her big key point was making sure that newborns had diapers because she had babies herself.
This is not only hard for us but for the community.
It really broke our heart.”
Enriquez helped organize Sunday’s fundraiser and block party initially to cover the costs of her $18,000 funeral, but a representative for local domestic violence nonprofit Helen and Joe Community Organization is covering the funeral costs, Enriquez said.
The thousands of dollars donated by neighbors on Sunday will go toward living expenses for her four children, he said.
“This is what community is all about,” Enriquez said.
“This is when the community comes together.
We have also got to take in consideration for her children, so all the funds are going to go to her to children.”
