MANSFIELD — Sunday was not a day of rest for Mansfield firefighters.
The Mansfield Fire Department responded to two structure fires in less than three hours, including providing mutual aid for a fire in Washington Township and a house fire in the city at 232 W.

Mansfield firefighters responded at 3:51 a.m. to provide assistance at a basement fire in the 200 block of Alexander Road East in Washington Township.
Mansfield crews assisted with fire attack, ventilation, overhaul and scene operations before returning to service.
At 6:14 a.m., crews responded to a reported house fire on West Fifth Street at a building operated by the EXIT Program.
It’s a reentry and transitional housing initiative operated by NISRE, providing housing and support services for formerly incarcerated individuals.
NISRE is an acronym for Nothing Into Something Real Estate, a Columbus-based, faith-based non-profit organization that operates housing and reentry programs.
NISRE purchased the building in 2013 for $75,000, according to the Richland County Auditor’s website.
According to the NISRE website, the program provides transitional housing and halfway beds for men leaving incarceration, as well as job readiness and employment support.
It also offers reintegration counseling and community resource referrals.
Firefighters arrived to find light smoke showing from the two-story structure.
According to the incident report, a number of occupants were outside yelling a bedroom was on fire and there was a male in a wheelchair trapped.
Firefighters found an occupant standing on the second floor deck who appeared in distress, who reportedly was the resident reported trapped.
Firefighters also determined the fire had been extinguished by a resident using an ABC extinguisher.
Crews brought a high-powered fan into the residence to clear the smoke.
The man found on the back deck was treated and transported to the hospital.
The man who had put out the fire with an extinguisher was in the front of the building and needed medical attention.
Units on scene started assessment and treatment and a second rescue squad was requested to take the second man to the hospital for evaluation and/or treatment.
A fire investigator was summoned to the scene, as well as a Mansfield police detective due to the fire’s suspicious origin.
According to the MFD incident report, the first man taken to the hospital told firefighters he started the fire and then refused to continue talking.
Firefighters made contact with the program manager for the EXIT Program that housed the residents and obtained owner information, but she could not provide further than contact information.
The fire remains under investigation.
