A Rhode Island Department of Human Services supervisor has pleaded guilty to misusing her position to access more than $300,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, according to federal prosecutors.

Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island said that Nadine Jean Baptiste "admitted to repeatedly accessing SNAP Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card information, conducting unauthorized telephonic balance inquiries, and altering PIN numbers associated with those cards."
Many of the SNAP recipients whose information was accessed were juveniles, homeless or incarcerated at the time, according to a press release.

Attorney's Office alleges that Baptiste, 59, of Warwick, and her daughter "fraudulently accessed SNAP benefits to make personal purchases."
Baptiste's prosecution stemmed from an investigation that began in Sept. 2023, after the Rhode Island Office of Internal Audit received multiple complaints from SNAP recipients through its Fraud Hotline.
Those recipients said that they'd been issued EBT cards, colloquially known as food stamps, but never received them.
Typically, EBT cards are mailed to a recipient's home, but can also be picked up in person by individuals who are homeless and have no permanent address, the release noted.
Records show that Baptiste was charged in July with one count of conspiracy and one count of SNAP benefit fraud.
She pleaded guilty on Aug. 4, according to the release.
Baptiste's daughter is also facing charges.
That case remains ongoing.
