GREENPORT — A town police officer is facing a driving while intoxicated charge after she drove her patrol car off the road.
Officer Stephanie Van Alstyne was driving northbound on Route 9 near the Greenport Commons shopping plaza on Sunday when she veered off the road and crashed her patrol car around 4:40 p.m., according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office confirmed Monday that Van Alstyne was on duty at the time.
Van Alstyne allegedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.15% — almost twice the legal limit of .08% — and was charged with a DWI.
She had minor injuries but declined treatment, deputies said.
Van Alstyne also works as a correction officer for the sheriff’s office.
She was immediately suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation, deputies said.
Neither the Greenport Police Department nor the town supervisor returned requests for comment or to confirm Van Alstyne’s status as a town police officer.
