Police responded to a fatal crash on Friday morning at Powell and Market streets, one of downtown San Francisco’s busiest intersections. 
Officers found a person in the street with life-threatening injuries at 8:18 a.m., according to the San Francisco Police Department. 
Despite life-saving efforts, they were declared dead at the scene. 
Police located the vehicle and the driver, who is cooperating.

In a post on social media, the city’s office of emergency management asked residents to avoid the area of Powell and Market streets due to police activity. 
Traffic fatalities in San Francisco in 2026 continue to outpace last year’s numbers. 
Eleven people have been killed while walking in San Francisco as of June, part of 14 traffic deaths citywide, up from 13 at the same point in 2025, according to city data. 
In December 2025, Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a new street-safety plan as part of a citywide overhaul of how it handles traffic safety after San Francisco’s Vision Zero policy expired last year.
