A Newport man was arrested and ordered held without bail Friday evening after Vermont State Police said he threatened passers-by with a machete in Barton Village and later fought with police.

Police said the man, identified as Kyle Lowe, 41, of Newport, fled into woods near the Barton River.
A state trooper and Newport police officer located him near the river at about 7:30 PM.
After several minutes of attempts to negotiate with Lowe, police said he ran, prompting a brief foot pursuit into a cornfield near Elm Street.
As officers closed in, Lowe allegedly turned and attempted to tackle a pursuing trooper.
He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
No injuries were reported.
