Wyoming Department of Transportation roadwork along Poplar Street has temporarily closed the road at its intersection with CY Avenue.
(Tommy Culkin, Oil City News)
CASPER, Wyo.  The Wyoming Department of Transportation recently released its State Transportation Improvement Plan for the coming year, which includes more than $156 million in planned infrastructure investments across Natrona County through the coming years.
The plan outlines a comprehensive schedule of highway reconstructions, bridge replacements and significant enhancements to local transit and aeronautics facilities.
A centerpiece of the 2026 cycle is the planned $34.2 million reconstruction of the Interstate 25 Casper Marginal, which will include pavement reconstruction for mainline roads and ramps, bridge rehabilitation and traffic signal upgrades.
Work in Casper will also focus heavily on the intersection of Poplar Street and CY Avenue, where crews are slated to perform reconstruction involving new sidewalks, curb and gutter work and storm sewer upgrades totaling approximately $8.7 million.
To maximize efficiency, local utility improvements for water and sewer lines will be conducted simultaneously with these roadworks.
Another planned project in fiscal year 2027 will look to enhance regional connectivity and pavement rehabilitation on U.S.
Highway 20/26 between Casper and Shoshoni.
The $16 million project is expected to include the addition of passing lanes and chip sealing to improve traffic flow and road longevity.
Other 2027 priorities include the $1.35 million replacement of the Badwater Road bridge spanning Badwater Creek and pavement work on Wyoming Boulevard totaling $5 million.
The county’s aeronautics infrastructure is planned to see about $1.44 million in designated improvements.
These projects at the Casper-Natrona County International Airport include $60,000 for aircraft rescue fire training and a $1.38 million pavement rehabilitation effort.
In Evansville, officials have earmarked $20,000 for a reconnaissance report to study Lathrop Road from Curtis Street to East Hills Drive, an area that includes the Texas Street extension intersection.
Significant pavement work is also planned within the Casper area, including a $2.24 million resurfacing project for nearly 10 miles of Hat Six Road.
The project will involve overlay and chip sealing to extend the life of the roadway, WYDOT states in the improvement plan.
Additionally, a 4.15−mile section of Wyoming Boulevard is slated for a $5 million rehabilitation consisting of milling and overlay work.
The 2028 fiscal year includes $17.9 million in projects, highlighted by $10 million for pavement rehabilitation on Wyoming Highway 220 between Muddy Gap and Casper.
Within Casper city limits, officials have designated $441,000 for safety enhancements on 1st Street between Yellowstone Highway and Casper Creek.
These community development efforts will include the installation of decorative islands meant to channelize traffic and address pedestrian safety concerns.
Long-term planning for 2029 and 2030 includes several major structural replacements and high-traffic-area repairs.
Bridge replacements are scheduled for Gray Reef Road and Thirty-Three Mile Road in 2029, representing a combined investment of roughly $7 million.
With the release of the multi-year plan, WYDOT is now seeking public feedback on the list of projects.
