Respect your elders : You don’t hear much about the Silent Generation but they are pretty badass.
A group of women in their 80s have been coming together every night to bang pots and pans on a D.C. street corner to protest National Guard occupation since it first arrived a year ago.
One told WTOP she wants people to know D.C. is not a crime-ridden or terrible place to live.
To mark the official one-year anniversary of the deployment, they are planning a larger rally Monday, with a march starting at Franklin Park and ending at Thomas Circle.
“We love it when cars will honk for us, that makes us feel that we are being seen and heard,” another told WTOP.
The protesters said they will keep this up until the Guard is gone.
Plus five points for never giving up.

Save the data : In May, a federal judge ordered the current leadership of the Kennedy Center to examine how a two-year closure would impact the landmark, but now that the board is about to vote on it (Aug. 13), board members have no new assessments that they need to make a decision.
Center officials sent trustees a “bare-bones agenda” that included no studies or analyses of the impacts it would have on programming, sales, or a multiyear $250 million renovation.
“The American people deserve to know what the plan is to save their national treasure from Trump administration chaos and corruption,” says Rhode Island Sen.

Grease is the word : U.S. oil and gas companies are pulling in massive profits as convicted felon and President Donald Trump ’s Iran war drives energy costs up while consumers pay high prices and face shortages.
The profits made between early April and late June could receive extra scrutiny this year: Exxon made $14.5 billion; Chevron, $12.1 billion; BP, $5.7 billion; and Shell, $9.8 billion.
Democrats in Congress introduced bills to tax big oil companies for profits from 2026 onward and have the tax proceeds redistributed to consumers.
Minus one point for war profiteering and price gouging but plus one for legislation.

Game of drones : Organized by Freedom250 and allegedly a way to celebrate the nation’s 250th (how?), Trump’s “Patriot Games” is a national competition of high school students that will be aired on the ESPN App Aug. 9 through 11.
The competitions include dodgeball, kickball, and tug-of-war—the official sports of people who grew up 60-plus years ago.
Details have been sparse, even to the families traveling to the games, contestants told USA Today .

Spending freely : Congress already spent $150 million on the country’s 250th anniversary events, but now Trump’s Freedom250 wants $10 million more.
Of the $150 million, $50 million was for the org Congress created to fund the celebration, America250 (which may have only received half), and $100 million was for Freedom250 (which also solicited donations from private corporations).
Now Freedom250 wants another $10 million, apparently for “routine costs,” including the Rededicate 250 prayer event, Great American State Fair, and July 4th Salute to America.
Members of Congress have asked the Department of Interior for details about how Freedom250 spent the $100 million, private donor information, and costs related to the events.
Minus two points for reckless spending. -2 [ USA Today ]
