A Colombian man has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for his role in an organized jewelry theft ring that targeted malls across the country — including one in Connecticut — and is suspected of stealing more than $4 million worth of merchandise.
Harold Ramirez Cagua, also known as “Gordo,” 42, who last resided in Miami, Florida, faced sentencing this week in federal court in Bridgeport where U.S.
District Judge Kari A.
Dooley sentenced him to 57 months in prison, according to the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
The sentencing came after Ramirez Cagua accepted a plea bargain in March 2025, when he pleaded guilty to interstate transportation of stolen property, officials said.
He has been in custody since July 2024.
According to federal officials, Ramirez Cagua and several other Colombian nationals are believed to have burglarized jewelry stores and kiosks in malls in Connecticut and other states between May 2023 and April 2024.
Law enforcement officials believe they transported the stolen property or the proceeds from it across state lines.
Before each burglary, co-conspirators involved in the scheme surveilled the stores and kiosks to “formulate game plans,” officials said.
As part of their recon work, they posed as legitimate customers to scope out merchandise and any security measures that were in place, according to officials.
Investigators with the U.S.
Attorney’s Office said Ramirez Cagua served as the crime ring’s logistics operative, booking flights for co-conspirators to travel, securing rental cars and reserving lodging.
During the burglaries, officials said they believe he and associates forced their way into closed businesses, sometimes by cutting a hole through a wall, and then pried open and smashed locked display cases.
They then carted off the stolen merchandise.
Ramirez Cagua and others are believed to have burglarized jewelry establishments in Paterson, New Jersey, on May 17, 2023; in Mentor, Ohio, on July 21, 2023; in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Aug. 14, 2023; in Greece, New York, on Sept. 20, 2023; at the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford on Oct. 5, 2023; in Lombard, Illinois on Oct. 17, 2023; in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, on Oct. 27, 2023; in Henrico, Virginia on Nov. 4, 2023; and in Horseheads, New York on April 18, 2024.
The total losses from the burglaries exceeded $4.4 million, officials said.
Authorities noted that members of the ring also cased additional jewelry stores and kiosks in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Delaware.
As of Ramirez Cagua’s sentencing, none of the stolen jewelry has been recovered by law enforcement.
Investigators believe much of the stolen jewelry was sold to the owner of a jewelry store in Queens, New York, who then sold it to others, including those he knew would melt down the gold.
